Yoga programs for children.
•What teachers are saying about the workshop•
"Lisa, You have made such a difference at Central School! Thank you so much for
all you've done with our staff and our children. One of our third grade
boys was so frustrated yesterday-he used his breathing strategy-slowed
down (even cried a bit) and then was able to share about his frustration
and return to the activity. Being aware of his body/tension and knowing
what to do-what a relief for him! That never would have happened at the
beginning of last year. What a gift you have given him (and all of us)!" ~ V. Stewart, Principal

"I am so excited to use these wonderful tools with my students. These are skills they can keep with them and utilize throughout life." ~ T. Cattabriga, HS Social Worker

"VERY helpful, wonderful ideas; THANK YOU!" ~ P. McIntire, G4/5 Special Ed.

"Workshop was well organized, planned and presented - light and serious at the same time. I will definitely bring it up to my administration as a staff development item!"

YOGA 4 CLASSROOMS®

Based on the nationally-recognized
Yoga Ed.™ program, ChildLight Yoga's Yoga 4 Classrooms® program includes:

Yoga Ed.™ K-8 Tools for Teachers Workshop

and/or

Yoga 4 Classrooms®

(In-Classroom Residency)

Yoga Ed.™ develops and produces health/wellness programs, trainings and products for teachers, parents, children and health professionals that improve academic achievement, physical fitness, emotional intelligence and stress management.

Yoga Ed. believes physical, mental and emotional health is directly correlated with academic success and fulfillment in life.

"Yoga is a powerful ecumenical system for helping children stay focused, centered and peaceful which, in turn, helps them concentrate better, learn more, and gain physical and mental health throughout their lives. Highly recommended."
Dean Ornish, M.D., Founder and President, Preventive Medicine Research Institute, S.F., C.A.

A 2003 California State University study shows a link between yoga and better learning, improved behaviors, and higher self-esteem. Students quickly learn to use yoga as a tool, not just to increase physical fitness, but also to manage their feelings and behaviors, and to create a mental state ready for learning and taking tests.

The following are some of the benefits of yoga and movement to maximize the learning process:
  • Partner and group poses require students to work together as a team, creating positive social interaction.
  • Balancing poses build focus and concentration.
  • Some yoga exercises can help students relax, calming pre-test jitters.
  • Other, more invigorating yoga techniques are useful for waking up sluggish minds before class or after lunch.
  • Yoga offers children healthy ways to express their emotions, rather than bottling them up or striking out.
  • Slow, even, “belly breaths” short-circuit the fight-or-flight response to stress, and promote a more relaxed, comfortable state - a perfect state for learning.
  • A non-competitive yoga atmosphere where everyone can succeed fosters a can-do attitude, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Yoga Tools for Teachers Workshop
Have you ever thought about how much easier and effective teaching would be if students could relax and focus? If there was something simple and quick that that you could do to help your students (and you!) destress, calm, center or energize, would you try it?

Yoga Ed. Tools for Teachers Workshops train classroom teachers to use simple yoga-based mind-body integration techniques as effective behavior and classroom management activities. Specifically designed for the classroom, needing no extra space or equipment, Yoga Tools consist of 5-15 minute breath and movement sequences, games and visualizations that anyone can do to immediately feel more attentive, energized and calm. Yoga Tools help teachers create a more focused, harmonious environment and support students in feeling ready and able to learn. No prior yoga experience required.

Can't imagine having time to add yoga to an already over-filled school day? Many teachers have found that when they incorporate yoga into class time regularly, they actually have more time for academics – because they spend less time helping students transition from one activity to another, and less time managing classroom behavior issues.

Envision your students (and yourself!) spending 60 seconds doing a series of simple yoga poses to energize the start of the day, a 20 second breathing exercise to smoothly transition between activities, or a 2 minute creative visualizaton to help your students calm and focus before a test. You may even utilize the yoga tools to emphasize a specific subject matter currently being studied.

Bring yoga, relaxation and visualization into the classroom and watch your students become more confident, focused, motivated and ready to learn!

Yoga 4 Classrooms® Residency
The Yoga 4 Classrooms® initiative was developed by Certified Yoga Ed. Facilitator and ChildLight Yoga Founder, Lisa Flynn. The purpose of the program is to expand upon and enrich Yoga Ed. Tools for Teachers (above) by providing teachers and students with in-classroom yoga sessions. These sessions provide teachers and students the opportunity to gain proficiency in the use of the yoga tools with the goal of achieving regular and long-term use. The program serves to assist teachers and students in learning how to be ‘yoga-educated’ - having the ability to notice when there is an imbalance and to choose the appropriate yoga tools to re-harmonize the classroom for reduced stress, improved focus and learning. The Y4C program also includes a nutrition component which ties into the overall health-focused initiative. Instructors emphasize how the yoga tools and other skills learned can also be applied in daily life, outside the classroom, for long-term physical and emotional health and well-being.

Program Overview:
  • Ideally (not required), teachers participate in a 4-6 hr. Yoga Ed.™ Tools for Teachers Workshop (see above).
  • Classroom teachers participate in a 30 min. meeting to overview the Yoga 4 Classrooms program (can be included as last portion of workshop above, if contracted in advance).
  • Each classroom (teachers and students) participates in 30 min., in-classroom sessions, once per week for 10 weeks.
  • Curriculum is age-appropriate / based on grade level.
  • All classes are led by Certified ChildLight Yoga and/or Yoga Ed. Instructors who have been specially trained to teach the Yoga 4 Classrooms curriculum.
  • Teachers are supplied with Yoga 4 Classrooms mini-lessons/yoga tools developed specifically for teachers for in-classroom use.
  • In addition, the Yoga 4 Classrooms Card Deck (currently in development) will be utilized as a leave behind classroom tool.
  • Classroom teachers participate in a 30 min. follow-up meeting at the conclusion of the residency.

Program Objectives:
Teachers:
  • Teachers experience the beneficial effects using yoga-based activities – both for themselves and with their students. They become yoga-educated.
  • Teachers are inspired and motivated to continue to implement the program in the classroom following the conclusion of the residency.
  • Teachers feel confident in their ability to utilize the Y4C program with their students – for the remainder of the current school year, and also with future classrooms.
  • Teachers “become the change they want to see.”

Students:
  • Experience for themselves the effects of yoga tools to calm, focus and energize, as needed.
  • Over time, students learn self-awareness and recognition of imbalances – they become yoga-educated.
  • Proficiency in the use of yoga tools is achieved.
  • Students become empowered to support their own health and well-being – in and out of the classroom.
  • As students move up through the grades of the school, they continue to utilize yoga tools with the assistance of their teachers.

School:
  • Program supports ongoing school initiatives such as anti-bullying, physical and emotional health & wellness promotion, respect for others, self and the environment, and educational objectives including literacy and math concepts.
  • Once implemented, program is self-sustaining as teachers continue to use the practices with upcoming classes of students.
  • School culture is positively impacted as everyone shares the common ‘language of yoga’, creating a sense of community and harmony within the school.
